Pancreatic cancer is a serious condition that only few people manage to survive. The American Cancer Society estimated that about 53,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone. Some 41,000 Americans will succumb to pancreatic cancer.
This particular form of cancer has witnessed very few breakthroughs in treatment or detection over the past few decades. While survival rates for breast, prostate and even some forms of lung cancer have improved dramatically in recent years, the same cannot be said for pancreatic cancer.
Researchers, however, believe they may have found a way to stop metastasis in its tracks. This could potentially hold the door open for more effective treatments while lowering the mortality risk associated with this form of cancer. At present, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is less than 10 percent.
The breakthrough that has researchers so excited involves a mechanism to control cholesterol metabolism in pancreatic cancer cells. When this is achieved, researchers have found that pancreatic cancer is much less like to spread to other organs. The research to date has focused on one of the more aggressive types of the disease, which is even more encouraging.
The study in question involved the use of drugs that have been previously approved for treatment of atherosclerosis. By reducing the accumulation of cholesteryl ester, the drugs have shown themselves to be useful in preventing the spread of pancreatic cancer. So far, research has centered on mice without the benefit of human trials. The findings, however, showed that mice treated with the drugs were much less likely to witness the development of pancreatic cancer lesions in their livers.
While much study remains to be performed to see if cholesterol control can stop aggressive pancreatic cancer from spreading, the latest research is a major step in the right direction. Pancreatic cancer is among the most difficult forms to detect. This, in turn, makes it very difficult for early interventions to take place. Whereas cancers, such as breast and prostate, have early screening protocols, the same simply isn’t so for pancreatic cancer. Gaining an edge in treatment may one day delver hope to those diagnosed with the disease.
People who are concerned about the potential of pancreatic cancer are urged to discuss the condition with their healthcare providers. This form of cancer tends to present with few or rather vague symptoms at its onset. Risk factors include diabetes, chronic pancreatitis and family history, among others.
A coeliac disorder can manifest itself at any age. In children it usually becomes evident three to five months after commencing eating gluten-containing foods. In the worst cases, the infant will refuse his feeds, stop putting on weight, become irritable, or listless and develop a large abdomen. Stools become abnormal, either large, pale and offensive or developing into diarrhoea.
In other cases, no symptoms are shown until later in childhood when lack of growth and poor appetite become evident. Tests will indicate excess fat in stools and lack of protein and iron in the blood. A possible diagnosis can be established by passing a tube through the mouth into the upper part of the small intestine and obtaining a tiny piece of its mucosa lining. Examination under a microscope can sometimes show whether degeneration of the villi has taken place.
It has been found in recent years that this procedure does not always show the existence of coeliac disease, leading to conjecture that gluten/wheat intolerance may be far more prevalent than has been traditionally accepted. Therefore, irrespective of the result, a biopsy should be further verified by the use of a low carbohydrate, grain and gluten-free diet, for one or two months. An improvement in health will verify the existence of coeliac disease. Once this disease has been established, the removal of all gluten-containing foods from the diet will ensure a swift recovery. In addition, it may be necessary to restrict fats and sugars for a month or two, until the villi have begun to recover. Full recovery should take place after two to twelve months on a gluten-free diet. Once recovery is advanced, many allergy-type symptoms will disappear as the intestine loses its sensitivity to previously untolerated foods.
It is absolutely essential that a gluten-free diet be maintained permanently. Teenagers, who have been on a gluten-free diet for a number of years, may feel well enough to commence eating normal flour products again. This is a serious mistake and will eventually lead to a breakdown in health caused by renewed damage to the small intestine, and resulting in slowly increasing malabsorption of essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals and amino acids). It may be one or two years before actual symptoms are again experienced, but eventually, unless the gluten-free diet is resumed, chronic illness and stoppage of growth will result.
Coeliac disease in adults:
Unfortunately, coeliac disease in adults is neither as easily recognizable nor as quickly recovered from, as in children. Usually it is a less obvious form of the disease which was not apparent during childhood. Even so, the person concerned may have been quite sick since early infancy. Usually such a person either has a history of chronic illnesses which he or she was expected to ‘grow out of’, or is underdeveloped to some degree, with a tendency towards lethargy and depression.
Because of the time span, coeliac disease, diagnosed in adulthood, will usually have resulted in a greater degree of damage to the small intestine than that occurring in childhood. Some adult coeliacs will only partly respond to a gluten-free diet, due to extensive damage to the small intestine over such a long period. In these cases, almost 5 per cent, corticosteroids have been used with some success. In the great majority of cases however, rigid abstention from grains and gluten, together with reduced intake of refined carbohydrates, revolutionizes the sufferer’s health and is the only treatment necessary. Supplements of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, taken especially during the first twelve months of a gluten-free diet, will speed up the recovery process.
Unfortunately, the incidence of cancer in patients with adult coeliac disease that remains undetected, is high, up to about 13 per cent. Lymphoma and carcinoma of the small intestine can be fatal complications of this distressing illness. Other illnesses, as potentially serious, can develop as a result of allergy overload due to increasing intolerance by the small intestine to a wide range of foods and substances.
Most lung cancers are termed “carcinomas”, which are tumors caused by uncontrolled reproduction of epithelial cells; these are the cells which form the linings and surfaces of most of the bodies organs and internal structures. There are two main types of carcinoma which are classified according to the size and presentation of the cancerous cells.
After a biopsy has been taken (which removes part of the tissue suspected to be cancerous), a laboratory specialist, known as a “histopathologist”, places the biopsy sample under a microscope and is able to determine whether cancer is present and whether it is non-small cell or small cell cancer. The former accounts for the bulk of lung cancers (80%) but whatever classification is accorded, it is important because different treatment regimes are more effective at treating the different types (note that there are other classifications but these two are the major ones).
Non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) are themselves further classified into three different types though the treatment therapies are very similar for all of them:
Squamous cell lung carcinoma;
Large cell lung carcinoma.
Squamous cell lung cancer occurs in around a quarter of all lung cancer patients and is usually located near the central bronchus, this is the main airway leading into the lungs themselves. Fortunately, these types of cancer are less aggressive and grow slowly.
Adenocarcinoma occurs in approximately 40% of patients and starts in the outer lung tissue and is most closely associated with smoking, though many non-smokers also present this form of the disease. Whether a patient is male or female and whether they have smoked or not will determine different treatment paths for them under this category.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is much less common and usually presents itself in the larger airways (the “bronchi”), but while less common they are unfortunately, much more aggressive. While this form lends itself to treatment by chemotherapy or radiation treatment, however, in many patients by the time it has been diagnosed the cancer has frequently spread (or “metastasized”) to other parts of the body. The prognosis for SCLC is usually quite poor and is the type of lung cancer which is most commonly associated with smoking.
No matter what type of lung cancer a patient presents, it is vital that it is diagnosed as soon as is possible in order to maximize the chances of a positive outcome. Diagnosis and classification of the type of cancer is the first stage in the process of delivering effective treatment for patients, and as quickly as lung cancer has been diagnosed, it must then be “staged”. Staging is the process by which the degree of spread and size of a cancer has gotten to; there are four stages, I through IV, with stage I being the best assessment and IV the worst. Staging is important because it directly impacts upon the treatment regime which must be delivered as well as classification of the cancer type. Being educated about your condition is key to choosing the right treatment.
The testosterone is a type of hormone that belongs to androgen group. It is mainly formed in the male testes and in a small amount in the adrenal glands. It also performs different types of important functions in a male body. These mainly include:
1. It has a major role in developing the issues of the male reproductive organs like testes and prostate. 2. It promotes the growth of the hair 3. It develops both the muscle mass and the bone mass 4. It also has an important role in the overall health and well being of the male.

Around 60,000 people in the UK contract skin cancer each year. It begins when your skin cells start to grow in a rapid and out of control way. This then leads to a malignant (cancerous) tumour forming on your skin. Whilst exposure to sunlight is the leading risk factor for this type of cancer there are others too. In this article I will be discussing three of the main skin cancer risk factors.
1) EXPOSURE TO ULTRAVIOLET (UV) LIGHT:- As I mentioned above this is the main risk factor for this type of cancer. The reason for this is that UV rays cause damage to the DNA in your skin cells increasing the chances of cell division going wrong and cancer forming. Sunlight contains UV rays so prolonged exposure to the sun through spending a lot of time outdoors can increase your risk. Sunbeds and sunlamps also emit high doses of UV light and so make you more likely to develop this condition.
2) LIGHT SKIN:- People who have light skin are more likely to develop skin cancer because their skin offers less protection from UV rays. Those with very light skin that goes red or freckles in the sun are most at risk, especially if they were heavily exposed to UV rays from an early age. Contrastingly people with dark skin are much less likely to develop this condition because their skin contains a melanin pigment which offers protection from UV rays.
3) GENETIC FACTORS:- There are a number of genetic factors that can increase your chances of contracting this type of cancer. First, having two or more family members that developed skin cancer is thought to increase your risk. Secondly, having blonde or red hair makes you more likely to develop this disease. Thirdly, people with blue eyes are thought to be at a greater risk than those with other eye colours. Finally, people with a large number of freckles or moles on their skin are thought to have a greater chance of developing this cancer.
Unlike other cancers you have full control over many of the risk factors linked to skin cancer. Long term exposure to UV rays makes you more likely to develop this condition especially if you have light skin, blonde or red hair, blue eyes or lots of freckles and moles. Therefore, if you know you are going to be out in the sun for long periods take the necessary precautions by covering your skin and wearing sun cream. If your genetic features make you an even higher risk for this type of cancer then make sure you take shelter regularly and avoid prolonged exposure to UV rays when you can. If you take these precautions you should be able to reduce your skin cancer risk.
Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Skin cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

There is every chance that you, or a family member, colleague, or friend has been affected in some way by breast cancer.
The words ‘breast cancer’ send a chill of fear down everyone’s spine. What is breast cancer and can you prevent it? Here are some facts about breast cancer that every woman should know. You will also learn more about prevention and early detection, especially important if you have a history of cancer in your family.
What Should I Know About Breast Cancer?
There are over two hundred different types of cancer and according to the American Cancer Society breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. While it is also possible for a man to get breast cancer women are 100 times more likely to develop it than men.
There are several forms of breast cancer that occur in different areas of the breast. Most breast cancers are treated with radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. The treatment program determined for any individual depends on the type of cancer, how far it has spread and where it is located. While great strides are taking place in cancer treatment, prevention and early detection are by far the most preferable options.
The statistics are grim. The American Cancer Society reports that 1 in 8 women in the US will experience invasive breast cancer in her lifetime. The chance of dying from breast cancer is one in 33, but that number is decreasing as new forms of treatment and early detection are being implemented.
The good news is that it is possible for women to reduce their risk of dying from breast cancer. When breast cancer is discovered and treated early, the chances for recovery are better.
Women with a high risk should primarily discuss the possible preventive measures currently available with their doctor. However, various simple self-help measures are described below.
Who is Most Likely to Get Breast Cancer?
While every woman has some level of risk there are certain factors that increase the likelihood a person may develop breast cancer. Not having these risk factors does not mean you will not develop cancer just as being at a high risk doesn’t mean you will develop cancer.
Smoking, age and family history are the common factors that are assessed when determining risk.
While smoking can be controlled, age and family history cannot. The older you are the greater the risk that you will develop breast cancer. Almost 8 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. If women in your family developed breast cancer you are also at an increased risk.
Certain genetic changes increase the risk that a woman will develop cancer to as high as 80%. Testing for these changes can help a woman and her doctor discuss preventative measures that might be taken.
Caucasian women have a higher risk of developing breast cancer but African-American women more often die from the disease. Asians, Hispanics and American Indian women are less likely to get it.
Starting your period (menstruation) before age 12 or going through menopause after 55 slightly increases the risk.
Having taken the drug DES (diethylstilbestrol), which some women were given in the belief it would prevent them from losing a baby, slightly increases the risk while radiation to the chest earlier in life greatly increases the risk.
Being overweight, use of alcohol, long term use of HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and not having children have all been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Using birth control pills may increase the risk and should be discussed with your doctor.
On the other hand exercise, healthy eating (especially reducing the intake of alcohol and red meats) or having had children early in life and breastfeeding for as long as 18 to 24 months have been linked to a reduced risk of developing breast cancer.
What Else Can I Do to Reduce the Risk?
While there are no cures yet, researchers have discovered that a healthy lifestyle is the best way to prevent cancer. Since cancer is a disease that starts in our cells, everything we eat and are exposed to can affect them.
Choose to be a non-smoker and avoid second-hand smoke.
In regards to diet, choose a variety of lower fat, high fiber foods. Studies have shown that intake of total fat, saturated fat and meat are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Maintain a healthy body weight and limit alcohol consumption.
Protect yourself from the sun.
At home and at work, follow health and safety instructions when using hazardous materials.
The link between an active lifestyle and breast cancer prevention is as yet unclear but general health is improved when regular exercise is an integral part of a person’s lifestyle.
Since early detection is so important it is vital that women learn how to detect lumps in their breasts and understand what precautions must be taken. Those who are more at risk of developing cancer should take extra steps to detect cancer as early as possible.
While a doctor or nurse can show you how to perform a BSE (breast self-exam) the American Cancer Society still recommends that women in their twenties and thirties should have a clinical exam every three years and once a year after 40. In later years most women should also have regular mammograms to catch cancers earlier. But what about the time in between mammograms and clinical exams?
This is when regular self examination is so important.
Every woman should know her own breasts so that any changes are noticed soon and can be checked out by a physician.
Regardless of age, all women should do a monthly breast self-examination a few days after their period. When doing breast self-examination, things to look for include: dimpling or puckering of the skin, swelling, discharges other than milk, bleeding or any other change to the nipple, or the appearance of what is sometimes called ‘orange peel skin’.
Any place in your breasts that feels lumpy or harder than the rest needs to be brought to the attention of a doctor. Most breast problems are not breast cancer and most lumps are not cancerous. When a lump is not cancerous it is referred to as ‘benign’. A cancerous lump is called ‘malignant’. But only a professional clinician can make that diagnosis and it’s no use waiting, worrying and hoping it will go away. Sometimes small lumps, in the early stages, are hard to find, but the earlier a lump is diagnosed, the better, so catch lumps small – don’t wait until they’re large.
Taking care of ourselves, including regular breast examinations, is an ongoing commitment that requires self-discipline and knowledge. It is well worth the effort as early diagnosis is definitely the most important factor in surviving breast cancer.
The inguinal hernia is a problem which take place in the internal abdominal fat or the small intestine which is also called as small bowel. Generally hernia occurs in a weak area in abdominal. Hence, the groin is a common place which the hernia happens. This type of hernia is called inguinal. We feel that the patient – physician relationship is unique, confidential and sacred and we strive to maintain this policy. Hematology is the science or study of blood, blood-forming organs and blood diseases. The medical aspect of Hematology is concerned with the treatment of blood disorders and malignancies, including types of hemophilia, leukemia, lymphoma and sickle-cell anemia. Hematology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with the physiology, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention of blood-related disorders. Hematologists also focus on lymphatic organs and bone marrow and may diagnose blood count irregularities or platelet irregularities. They are able to treat organs that are fed by blood cells, including the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus and lymphoid tissue. Bone Marrow Transplant:- Bone Marrow Transplant is a procedure to replace damaged or destroyed bone marrow with healthy bone marrow stem cells.Bone marrow is the soft, fatty tissue inside your bones. The bone marrow produces blood cells. Stem cells are immature cells in the bone marrow that give rise to all of your different blood cells. There are 3 kinds of bone marrow transplants: 1. Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant: The term auto means self. Stem cells are removed from you before you receive high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatment. The stem cells are stored in a freezer. After high-dose chemotherapy or radiation treatments, your stems cells are put back in your body to make normal blood cells. This is called a rescue transplant.
2. Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant: The term allo means other. Stem cells are removed from another person, called a donor. Most times, the donor’s genes must at least partly match your genes. Special tests are done to see if a donor is a good match for you. A brother or sister is most likely to be a good match. Sometimes parents, children, and other relatives are good matches.Donors who are not related to you, yet still match, may be found through national bone marrow registries. Hematology Doctor in Pune
3. Hyphoidentical Bone Marrow Transplant: This is a type of allogeneic transplant. An HLA-haploidentical donor shares a haplotype with the transplant recipient. This means that the donor and recipient have the same set of closely linked HLA genes on one of the two Number 6 chromosomes they inherited from their parents. Rather than being a perfect match for each other, they are a half-match. Click For More Details:http://www.hematologistpune.com/
